Dr. Devona Stalnaker-Shofner, LPC, NCC

My approach to counseling is based on my fundamental belief in the ability of people to heal, grow, and change, as well as the interconnectedness of the individual to their environment, culture, and community. This philosophy is shaped by my perspective regarding the importance of intimacy, attachment and emotional connectivity, as well as positive communication. It has been my experience that many problems individuals, couples, and families experience are the result of unhealthy, maladaptive communication patterns. This may negatively impact how we form bonds and relate intimately to others. My goal for therapy is fostering personal growth, facilitating the realization of individual potential, enhancing communication, and strengthening interpersonal relationships.
Working from an emotionally-focused, and systemic counseling framework, my professional experience includes providing individual, group, couples and family counseling to adolescents and adults from intersecting and widely varying cultural backgrounds with treatment issues such as depression, anxiety, and personality disorders, addictions/recovery, trauma, grief, sexual abuse, marital conflict, domestic violence, and self-mutilation/injury. In particular, I have significant experience working with BIPOC clients by providing transformative care with respect to racial trauma and racial identity development. I am also an experienced ally/accomplice working with persons who identify as being connected to the LGBTQIA+ community. My approach to counseling is one of affirmation, validation, and restoration as one works toward healing and wellness.
