Azia Carter Pre-Licensed Professional, LP-MFT

I am a New York based Marriage and Family Therapist and a Dwellness clinician. Dwellness provides therapeutic services to individuals and families across the lifespan via home-based, innovative in-person, and teletherapy practices. We believe that therapy should be comfortable, accessible, and customized to each individual client. Even when providing care virtually, Dwellness clinicians remain intentional about integrating the client’s space into the healing and growth processes. Our ability to meet you where you are and our creative framework to therapy allows us to provide optimal support for our clients.
I work with individuals and families across the lifespan, with a focus on couples. I assists clients in understanding the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, so that they can begin to make desired change and manage their emotions in a way that aligns with their values. I also work with couples and families to identify negative communication patterns and replace them with ones that allow for positive growth and change that continues outside of therapy. Using an integrated approach, I work with the whole family as a system to develop strategies that help the adolescents make maintainable shifts in their home and academic lives. I practice from a client-centered approach and received training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family Systems, and Gottman Couples Therapy.
I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology from University of Hartford. More recently, I completed my masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at LIU Brooklyn. Aside from my career as a Marriage and Family Therapist, I have extensive experience in the field of Applied Behavioral Analysis Therapy. Through my work as an ABA therapist, I successfully conducted in-home and center-based sessions for individuals of all ages on the autism spectrum, with a focus on strengthening social, communication, and learning skills. I completed my internship at Tillmon Behavioral Health Services, where I worked with clients to manage issues such as depression, anxiety, and relationship conflict. I aim to create a welcoming, non-judgmental space for my clients, ensuring that they feel safe, heard, and like an equal partner in the therapeutic process. I am also focused on ensuring that my clients see real progress: my style is interactive, person-centered, and positions clients as the experts on where they are now, and where they want to go.
