Donate Stock To Deconstructing the Mental Health System, Inc

Every share you give helps us pay BIPOC and QTPOC providers fairly, offer free therapy to community members who need it most, and build the mental health system our communities deserve.

A different way to support BIPOC and QTPOC mental health care in Washington State — one that can mean more for our community and more for you.

If you own stock that has grown in value, donating it directly, rather than selling it and giving cash, is one of the most powerful and often overlooked ways to support DMHS.

Why Donate Stock Instead of Cash?

When you sell appreciated stock, you typically owe capital gains tax on the increase in value before you ever get to give what’s left. When you donate that same stock directly to DMHS instead, two things happen:

  • You avoid capital gains tax entirely on the appreciation, since the donation happens before any sale.
  • You may be able to deduct the full fair market value of the stock at the time of your gift, not just what you originally paid for it.

In many cases, this means your gift goes further, and costs you less, than writing a check for the same dollar amount. It’s not a loophole. It’s simply how the tax code treats charitable giving of appreciated assets, and it’s one of the most common ways individuals and families support the causes they care about.

(This is general information, not tax advice. We always recommend speaking with your financial advisor or tax professional about what’s right for your specific situation.)

How It Works

Donating stock to DMHS is simpler than most people expect, and you don’t need to be a major investor to make an impact. Whether you’re gifting a few shares or a significant holding, the process takes just a few minutes.

  1. Initiate your gift through our secure stock donation partner, Stock Donator.
  2. Your broker transfers the shares directly to DMHS, no cash ever changes hands on your end.
  3. DMHS receives the full value of your gift, which goes directly toward free therapy, provider support, and workforce development for Washington’s BIPOC mental health community.
