This workshop is for BIPOC folx of all ages, with a range of explorations to be had. In this workshop, participants will be able to make take home works along with a print of a collaborative written work that responds to a handful of writing prompts during the workshop. We will be exploring current topics in conversation with how they relate and situate themselves in our bodies. This workshop is for BIPOC fox of all ages, with a range of explorations to be had. The basis of this workshop comes from a project held in Vancouver, BC, through the Arts Organisation, Black Arts Vancouver. In this workshop, participants were able to explore themes around how we express ourselves. About the artists: Simone Bailey is an artist who utilizes sculpture, performance, site specific installation, and video in her practice. Her work is an interrogation of disembodied poetics and the impulse to grasp the intangible. Her practice focuses on perception, process, ephemerality, desire, surrogate bodies, violence, and the impossible, all while maintaining an intimate proximity to blackness. Simone’s work has been exhibited at The Museum of the African Diaspora (San Francisco, CA), The Lab (San Francisco, CA), Southern Exposure (San Francisco, CA), Galería Luis Adelantado (Valencia, Spain), Armory Center for the Arts (Pasadena, CA), the Studio Museum in Harlem (New York, NY), and CDA Projects (Istanbul), among other venues. She received both an MFA in Fine Arts and an MA in Visual & Critical Studies from California College of the Arts. She also earned a BFA in Filmmaking from San Francisco Art Institute. Angela Davis has spent more than 50 years at the forefront of Black Liberation, Feminist, Queer, and prison abolitionist movements. Her seminal book Angela Davis: An Autobiography, originally published in 1974 and edited by Toni Morrison, captures Davis's formative years as a human rights activist and the journey that led her to become one of the most respected and recognized political activists of her generation. Dr. Davis's newest book, co-written alongside Gina Dent, Erica R. Meiners and Beth E. Richie, Abolition. Feminism. Now. deftly links together the history of abolitionist movements and the important role that Queer, anti-capitalist, and Women of Colour continue to play in vibrant community-based organizing. Views from the dissidence Conversation 1/3 Writing a TRANS(altar) Spirituality, blackness and dissidence We are pleased to invite you to participate in this space where the objective will be to address Afro-diasporic spirituality in a broader sense than what the West has imposed as a religion. Johan Mijail, writer and performance artist of Afro-Dominican origin, and, NaniCurvy Maracumango, Afro-Peruvian artist, will share and activate the space with their performative proposals which will lead us to interrogate heteronormativity, patriarchy, racism, and thus open up ancient memory by recognizing the ancestry and wisdom of our grandmothers. The presence of the dissident body is part of this challenge, which also draws attention using words, music and poetry, to challenge violent nationalisms, that kill, that inflict pain.
